John McKay Talks “Not Another Happy Ending”

John McKay says that he’s “always wanted to make an indie movie in Scotland”, and it looks like that aspiration is coming true: set in Glasgow, starring Doctor Who star Karen Gillan, and funded through contributions from fans, Not Another Happy Ending begins shooting in the middle of next month and sounds very promising. We spoke to McKay on the phone earlier today to find out what you can expect from the indie rom-com.

“It’s about a young, quirky novelist – Jane, who’s played by Karen Gillan – who has a kind of love-hate relationship with her publisher, a guy named Tom, who is very newly being played by a hot French actor called Stanley Weber,” he explains. The script was first sent to him by producer Claire Mundell and writer David Solomons two years ago, and it caught his eye because “it just seemed like a very untypical subject and tone for a Scottish film”.

Merchant City Resident: Ian from Khublai Khan

After an amazing meal out at Khublai Khan’s earlier this month we returned to quiz Sous Chef Ian about living in the Merchant City.

How long have you lived in the Merchant City?

Just over two years now.

What brought you to Glasgow?

Well, I’m originally from Balloch at Loch Lomond and there just weren’t as many opportunities there. So I moved to Glasgow for more job opportunities and to go to college. The nightlife in Glasgow was also a factor.

What brought you to the Merchant City?

I liked that the area was more affluent than other areas of Glasgow, while still being affordable - unlike the west end.

Where to you go to indulge in good food?

Boteco Do Brasil is nice for good, affordable pub grub. Just next door Maggie Mays restaurant - at the back - is nice for something a bit fancier. I’ve also tried a few places in Merchant Square.

Where are your favourite Merchant City nightlife spots?

Definitely Boteco Do Brasil, it’s got a good vibe – especially at the weekend. On Tuesdays visit Blackfriars for the Shiverin’ Sheiks playing live. It’s a must if you’re in the Merchant City.

What is your top shop in the Merchant City?

I study model making for film and TV at college so I often visit the model shop Jamiesons Models on Parnie Street. Apart from that I don’t really tend to shop in the Merchant City.

What thing to do or place to go is your Merchant City ‘hidden gem’?

It has to be the Blackfriars and the Shiverin’ Sheiks. They’re a must see and it’s always a great night. The free salsa club in Boteco Do Brasil is also really good and worth going along to. It’s great fun and there’s always a really good crowd.
